Holiday Lighting Tips

Showcase your holiday cheer and your imagination by decorating the exterior of your home or business. Here’s four tips to help you get started.

Create a Theme

Choose a theme, then select a collection of lights and decorations (props) that will tell the story. Highlight your theme with white or subtly tinted lights. For example, if dark red decorations are used, faintly tinted purple uplights add a beautiful glow to each decorative item.

Control Costs with Accents

You can reduce electricity costs by using accents rather than house and landscape lighting. Electric candelabras, electric lanterns, wreaths and oversized bows are all cost-effective options for creating an attractive outdoor display.

Stay Safe

Outdoor lights should be plugged into circuits protected by ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs). If outside plugs are not GFCI protected, buy a portable, outdoor GFCI at a hardware or home supply store.

A warm plug or wire means the circuit could be overloaded and dangerous. Other signs of overloading are circuit breakers or fuses that blow repeatedly. This usually means you have too many light strings directed to one circuit.

Keep holiday lights on only during evening hours and turn them off when you go to bed or leave the house.

Hire a Professional

Consider Hortus Landscape Design to help in unsafe conditions. Homes with roofs taller than 20 feet require industrial ladders or roof access to hang outdoor decorations. Also, high-voltage light bulbs present a fire hazard if improperly wired or placed. Hortus Landscape Design can assist you in arranging and installing your outdoor Christmas decorations while keeping you and your home safe.
